BEHAVIOR SUPPORTS: PBS ACTIVITIES & RESOURCES FOR PARENTS
Help your child re-learn the school wide expectations for Brandywine Springs and learn how to enforce those expectations during remote learning.
LESSON: Dealing With Uncertainty
Uncertainty is fed by a fear of the unknown. And while we can’t always be in control of situations around us, we can learn how to find our center in order to keep moving forward. Use Lex and his storyboard example to walk through some strategies to find one’s center in times of uncertainty.
LESSON: Emotions and Self Regulation
Take a look at Olympic bobsledder and Classroom Champions athlete mentor Nic Taylor’s video about Emotions. Self-regulation is a core skill that students need to learn to be successful in life. Students who can regulate their emotions are better able to engage in school, focus on the task at hand, and have healthier relationships.
VIDEOS: Social Emotional Learning Lessons
Second Step is a popular social emotional learning (SEL) program used by many schools. To help families during this time, they have made a series of videos (with accompanying educator and family lesson guides if you are interested) addressing various social emotional skills. Just put the videos on for your student and the Second Step instructor will do the rest.
Proactive Behavior Strategies
The best approach to challenging behavior is to practice proactive behavior strategies. It may not always prevent unexpected or unwanted behavior, but it will help set expectations and build a positive relationship that will make recovering from difficult behavior moments a bit easier.
Size of the Problem
These resources will help your child differentiate a big problem from a medium or small problem. it will also help your child match the size of their reaction to the size of the problem. For example, we don't want screaming and crying (big reaction) in response to not understanding your math homework (small problem)!
Reinforcement and Feedback
Reinforcement and feedback are just fancy ways of describing acknowledgement for expected (desired/positive) behaviors and correction of unexpected (undesirable/negative) behaviors. These resources will help you understand how to provide effective feedback in order to increase motivation, work completion, and compliance.
